JOB DESCRIPTION

Operating Room Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Assist in all general nursing activities of the operating room:

b. Prepares OR theaters for elective and emergency operations. This includes laying out of instruments, setting up of equipments, opening of sterile packs and supplies and other materials which will be used during the surgical procedures.

c. Acts as scrub nurse or circulating nurse during operation.

d. Carry out aseptic technique before, during and after surgery.

e. Arrange instruments and other articles according to specified procedures.

f. Positioning of patients before, during and after surgery.

g. Drapes the patient according to the type of procedure.

h. Monitor progress of surgery to ensure availability of additional instruments and supplies.

i. Monitor number of sponges and instruments used to ensure that all are accounted for after surgery.

2. Preserves and label specimen taken during surgery for further analysis.

3. Ensures that operating room is kept thoroughly clean every after procedure.

4. Maintains required records and reports.

5. Keeps record of fluids and related drugs used.

6. Writes down nurse’s notes in the Record of Operation sheet.

7. Ensures that patients are properly conducted out of the operating room after surgery.

8. Does washing and soaking of instruments every after use.

9. Packs instruments and linens for autoclaving and ready for surgical use.

10. Checks antiseptic and scrub solution canisters every night and refill them when necessary.

11. Updates all expired surgical supplies, linens, instruments and soaking solutions.

12. All OR nurses are on-call during mass emergencies and / or when under staff situation arises
